My name is Olga. I was born in the huge, busy, and rainy city of Saint Petersburg, Russia. There are so many canals, ducts, and rivers that it is proudly called the “Venice of the North.”
Everything about my city is beautiful: wide avenues and narrow lanes, grand bridges and tiny ones, pompous buildings and the crumbling apartments from Dostoevsky’s era. Everything is beautiful — except the climate. There are only about 50 sunny days a year, and the remaining 315 bring rain, snow, hail, or just endless overcast skies. But in spite of the rain and gray skies, I adore my city and am proud of the language it speaks.
Since I have always been torn between the two great loves of my life— horses and languages — I began my career as a veterinary doctor and was quite content. But that didn’t last too long. Some years later, my passion for languages returned with renewed vigor, and drastically changed my life by earning a degree in Linguistics. At first, my plan was to combine the two fields and translate medical and veterinary texts — and that’s what I did. But soon I realized that spending all day alone in front of a computer, isolated from colleagues and people, was not my cup of tea. So I continued studying, earned a TESOL certificate, and began teaching English to Russian children, teenagers, and adults. Eventually, my geography expanded, and I found myself in Spain, teaching English to Spanish kids and teenagers. After settling down in the USA, I became excited about teaching my mother tongue — Russian. I am very happy to be an ambassador of my culture and language, and I hope that my small contribution will help people understand one another better, stay curious, and remain open-minded. For those brave enough to set off on this challenging but thrilling adventure, I say: never give up, and sooner or later you will reap the fruits of your labor.
